Cost per Qualified Call: How to Calculate It
Cost per call is the number most call buyers watch. It is easy to get from any call platform or from Google Ads, and it is almost always wrong about which source is best. The number that matters is cost per qualified call.
The formula
Cost per qualified call = total spend on a source ÷ number of qualified calls from that source
"Spend" is whatever you paid for the calls: Google Ads cost for ad traffic, payouts for publisher traffic, or the list price for a dialer batch. "Qualified" is whatever your business counts as a good call: met your intake rules, was transferred, or became a signed case.
A worked example
Say you buy calls from two publishers in the same campaign.
| Source | Spend | Calls | Cost per call | Qualified | Cost per qualified call |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Publisher A | $6,000 | 200 | $30 | 120 | $50 |
| Publisher B | $5,000 | 200 | $25 | 70 | $71 |
On cost per call, Publisher B looks cheaper. On cost per qualified call, Publisher A is the better buy. If you moved budget toward B because its calls were $5 cheaper, you would pay more for every caller you can actually use.
These figures are an illustration, not a benchmark.
Why cost per call misleads
- Duration is not quality. A 90-second call can be a wrong number that took a while to hang up. See why call duration isn't call quality.
- Repeat callers inflate counts. The same person calling three times is three calls but one prospect.
- Sources differ in mix. One publisher may send more out-of-area or already-represented callers, which cost per call cannot show.
Comparing Google Ads and publishers fairly
Google Ads charges per click, publishers charge per call, and dialer lists charge per batch. Converting all of them to cost per qualified call puts them on one scale, so a $40 publisher call and a $60 Google Ads call can be judged on what they actually deliver.
Set a target per campaign
Work backwards from what a qualified call is worth to you. If a signed case is worth $X and one in N qualified calls signs, a qualified call is worth about X ÷ N. Set your target cost per qualified call below that, per campaign, and watch which sources are over target.
Doing this without listening to every call
The hard part is the bottom of the formula: knowing which calls qualified. Tagloud checks every call over 60 seconds against your rules with AI, joins it to Google Ads spend and publisher payouts, and shows cost per qualified call by publisher, campaign, keyword and hour.
